Geographic Records Checked and Annotated (Complete 10 Volumes)

Author: Wang Xiangzhi
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2005-10-01
Features: This book consists of six volumes, namely: "Catalog of Song and Yuan Geographical Records," "Record of Places," "Grand Unity of the Great Yuan and Examination of the Territory," "Yuan and Nine Domains," "Taiping Universal Records," and "Record of Places and Victories." It is divided into ten volumes. "Record of Places and Victories" is an important geographical general treatise in ancient China. This edition presents a collation and editing of "Record of Places and Victories," based on the Qing Daoguang edition of Ju Yingzhai, with reference to the Qing manuscript collection in the National Library of China and the Qing Xianfeng edition of Yue Yataang. During the collation and editing process, meticulous corrections were made to the "Geographical Records" and "Provincial and County Records" sections of official histories before the Song Dynasty, as well as to "Huayang Guo Zhi," "Shui Jing Zhu," "Yuanhe County and Prefecture Records," "Tong Dian · Provincial and County Records," "Taiping Universal Records," "Yuanfeng Nine Domains Records," "Record of Places and Broad Records," "Fangyu Shenglin," library editions, Yue Yataang editions, and the initial edition of "Catalog of Geographical Steles" from the "Comprehensive Collection of Series," "Record of Shu Steles," "Record of Shu Geographical Steles," "Yongle Dadian," and the "Qukuangshu" references to "Record of Places and Victories." Additionally, extensive references were made to the dynastic histories, unofficial histories, encyclopedias, anecdotal novels, collected poems, and individual works mentioned in "Record of Places and Victories," with references to hundreds of books. The reasons for errors in "Record of Places and Victories" are very complex and can be summarized into the following categories: First, the historical texts Wang Xiangzhi relied on themselves contained errors, especially in the local chronicles and maps he used during compilation, which were often inaccurate. Wang Xiangzhi did not correct these errors when citing them and simply transcribed them as they were. Second, the original texts were not incorrect, but errors occurred due to omissions or insertions during Wang Xiangzhi's compilation. Third, new errors were introduced during later photocopying or printing. During this collation and editing process, for obvious textual errors, inverted words, or missing content in the original text, regardless of the cause, corrections, deletions, or supplements were made based on external, internal, or reasoning collation, with explanations provided in the collation notes. To facilitate readers' understanding and research on Wang Xiangzhi and his work "Record of Places and Victories," this book includes an appendix compiled by Dr. Wang Xiaohong, which gathers relevant research materials. Some content in the appendix is derived from the collated and edited "Complete Artistic Works of Shu" by Liu Lin and Wang Xiaobo, as well as the "Geographical Collection of Qing Dynasty Literary Collections" edited by Tan Qixiang, among other collation and editing achievements. The appendix is divided into the following sections: (1) Main References; (2) Collected Lost Works of Wang Xiangzhi; (3) Research Materials on "Record of Places and Victories"; (4) Collected Historical Records of "Record of Places and Victories."
