Features: The National Mathematical Olympiad for Middle School Students in China is currently the highest-level subject knowledge competition for quality education among middle school students. It emphasizes the assessment of abilities, covers a broad range of content, features innovative questions, and encourages open thinking. It plays a strong guiding role in cultivating students' innovative abilities and training their divergent thinking. In recent years, the questions from the National Mathematical Olympiads for middle school students across various provinces and cities have emphasized close alignment with the new curriculum standards and integration with junior high school teaching content. These questions are ingeniously designed, with moderate difficulty, approaching the level of mid-term examination questions in various subjects, and their characteristics are largely similar to those of mid-term exams. Therefore, mastering the problem-solving strategies and answer techniques of Mathematical Olympiad questions is not only beneficial for students with strong academic performance in Mathematical Olympiads and competitions to develop their ability to compete for awards but also greatly helpful for ordinary students to deepen their understanding of textbook knowledge, expand their thinking, and prepare for mid-term exams. For this purpose, we have compiled this series of books, "Typical Mathematical Olympiad Questions: Practice Makes Perfect." This book has the following features:
1. Authority
The chief editor of the series, Shan Duan, is a renowned national Mathematical Olympiad coach, professor, and doctoral supervisor at Nanjing Normal University. He has previously served as the head of the National Mathematical Olympiad Coaching Group and the leader of the Chinese Mathematical Olympiad team. All contributors to the book are outstanding national and provincial Mathematical Olympiad coaches with rich experience in coaching and book compilation. The students they have guided have achieved excellent results in various competitions both domestically and internationally.
2. Systematic Approach
Unlike general collections of competition questions or purely methodological explanations, this book organizes the content by knowledge points, presenting it in a gradual and progressive manner. By learning individual knowledge points, readers can systematically master the entire subject.
3. Comprehensiveness
(1) Comprehensive Ability Development
The book cultivates and trains students' abilities in multiple aspects, including thinking, experimentation, observation and detection, imagination, and self-learning, fully developing their intelligence.
(2) Comprehensive Question Types
The book covers a wide range of question types, including hot topics, open-ended questions, classic questions, and STS-related questions, to broaden students' horizons and expand their thinking.
(3) Comprehensive Solutions and Hints
The book provides detailed analysis and solutions for selected typical examples, as well as thorough hints for general exercises, facilitating self-study and self-assessment.
4. Practicality
The book is structured in synchronization with junior high school teaching content, with a scientific and innovative layout. Each chapter includes:
(1) Knowledge · Principles · Methods
Summarizes key knowledge points, general principles, and basic methods.
(2) Examples · Analysis · Expansion
Presents selected typical examples with in-depth analysis and explanation, along with vertical thinking expansion.
(3) Assessment · Feedback · Improvement
Includes a selection of exercises closely related to the chapter content, with moderate difficulty and good differentiation, to assess knowledge mastery and improve problem-solving skills.
(4) Approach · Tips · Detailed Solutions
Designed for both teachers and students, these sections provide detailed solutions, highlight key approaches, and guide methods, essentially serving as guidance from master coaches.
The simulated tests at the end of the book are carefully designed based on a thorough study of the guiding principles, question-setting characteristics, and type distribution of recent national Mathematical Olympiad questions in various subjects. They are provided for students to self-assess after completing their review and practice.
Due to the limitations of our expertise, some omissions in the book may be unavoidable. We sincerely welcome feedback and corrections from our readers.
