Jaundice high can cause fever?

Patient's question:

My baby was born five days ago today. Since the afternoon of the third day, he has been showing signs of jaundice, but it's relatively mild. On the fourth day, the measured value was 12.7. Because my partner has type O blood, the doctor suggested it could be hemolytic jaundice and recommended we transfer to another department for further hospitalization. We called some other friends, and they all said it wasn't necessary.

Doctor's answer:

Newborn jaundice is generally not associated with fever. It is only when bilirubin encephalopathy or kernicterus occurs that fever may be induced. Under normal circumstances, the causes of newborn jaundice include insufficient feeding, hemolytic diseases, and infections. Therefore, when a newborn baby develops jaundice, it is important to actively investigate the underlying cause. Neonatal sepsis is a common cause of newborn jaundice. Thus, this child may have an infection, possibly even sepsis. The fever is caused by sepsis, not jaundice.
