Why do children with dengue fever have low fever?

Patient's question:

Doctor, hello! These past few days, my child hasn't been feeling well, and they even had a fever today. In desperation, I took my child to the children's hospital for a comprehensive check-up, including blood tests. The diagnosis is that my child has symptoms of dengue fever.

Doctor's answer:

The symptoms of dengue fever are different from those of the common cold and fever. Typical patients with dengue fever may exhibit: breakbone fever, which is not just fever but also accompanied by severe bone pain, joint pain, headache, and significant muscle pain all over the body, as well as general weakness. Although the fever duration in most dengue fever cases is within 7 days, some patients may experience biphasic fever, where the temperature drops after 3-5 days of fever, returns to normal for 1-3 days, and then fever recurs. During or after the fever, the condition may worsen due to low white blood cell counts and a decrease in platelet counts, leading to bleeding symptoms and rashes. Some patients' rashes may be itchy. In severe cases, such as severe dengue fever or dengue hemorrhagic fever, there may be bleeding from internal organs, even hypotension and shock, which could potentially lead to death.
