What does the hymen look like? How can it not be visible

Patient's question:

No

Doctor's answer:

The hymen is a hollow membrane covering the external vaginal opening of a female, about 1 to 2 millimeters thick. The front and back surfaces of the membrane are moist mucous membranes, with connective tissue, small blood vessels, and nerve endings between the two layers of mucous membranes. The small hole in the middle is called the hymen hole. The size of the hymen hole and the thickness of the membrane vary. The diameter of the hymen hole is about 1 to 1.5 centimeters, usually round, oval, or serrated; some are crescent-shaped with the hole offset to one side; some are divided into two small holes arranged vertically or horizontally; some have many scattered small holes, like the holes on a sieve.
