Male azoospermia

Patient's question:

Two people have been married for 2 years without taking any contraceptive measures, but they have not been able to get pregnant. A few days ago, they went to the Reproductive Medicine Department of Liaocheng No. 2 Hospital for examination. The results showed that the sperm ABCDEF values were all zero. Initial diagnosis suggests azoospermia.

Doctor's answer:

The causes of azoospermia are generally as follows:
(1) Some individuals are born without the ability to produce sperm. This abnormality is discovered through chromosomal and genetic studies or detected via biopsy. It can also be identified through multiple semen analyses.
(2) Inability to produce sperm due to orchitis, often caused by mumps, though other infections can also lead to this condition.
(3) Obstruction in the pathway of sperm, resulting in azoospermia upon ejaculation. For example, gonorrhea may sometimes cause vas deferens blockage.
(4) Absence of testicles or conditions such as cryptorchidism, epididymal cysts, or injuries.
(5) Aging, which can reduce the testicles' ability to produce sperm. However, this varies among individuals, as some remain fertile even into their 70s.
(6) Other factors, such as nutritional deficiencies, industrial hazards, exposure to radiation, febrile diseases, allergic reactions, and harmful habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
In some cases of azoospermia, fertility can be restored through treatment. However, further examination is needed to determine the exact cause of your condition in order to provide targeted therapy.
