To help candidates expand their foundational knowledge and develop basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, cultivate preliminary abilities to use English for communication and reading, and enhance intellectual development, as well as improve thinking, observation, attention, memory, imagination, association, and exam-taking skills, this book is strictly compiled in accordance with the English Teaching Syllabus for Nine-Year Compulsory Education. It highlights key and challenging points, providing guidance and training on problem-solving methods, approaches, and techniques for each unit's specific content.
2. Each unit is divided into two parts: Part 1 is the "Olympiad Guide," introducing Olympiad content, question types, and solving techniques. Part 2 is the "Olympiad Sample Test," enabling candidates to familiarize themselves with the question-setting methods, solving approaches, and techniques for various question types. The difficulty level of the questions is moderate, helping candidates gradually build confidence and a sense of achievement.
3. Part 1 outlines the following key points for each unit's specific content:
- Phonetics: Candidates are required to correctly pronounce words using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), master pronunciation rules, remember the sounds of vowel letter combinations, and understand the pronunciation rules for consonant letters and consonant letter combinations. Additionally, they must grasp the pronunciation rules for word forms when adding suffixes.
- Vocabulary: Candidates should master word forms, meanings, phrases, synonyms, and antonyms.
- Grammar: Candidates must grasp morphology and syntax, the ten parts of speech, sentence types, sentence components, the five basic sentence patterns, compound sentences, and the various tenses and usages of verbs.
- Sentence Patterns: Closely related to grammar and communication, this section includes analyses of difficult sentences and example sentences to reinforce understanding.
- Communication: This section lists communication expressions, explaining the linguistic context and scenarios.
4. Introduction to Olympiad Question Types and Solving Techniques:
- Phonetics: Primarily focuses on distinguishing sounds, generally requiring candidates to select the correct pronunciation option. Solving Technique: Master pronunciation rules and familiarize yourself with the sounds of letters and letter combinations.
- Multiple Choice: This is a familiar question type that assesses comprehensive language skills, covering grammar, vocabulary, idioms, and communication. Among the four options, one is the best choice, two are close, and one is a distractor. The goal is to evaluate the candidate's ability to apply language in real contexts, requiring an understanding of the context, comprehension of the question, logical reasoning, comparison, and analysis.
- Vocabulary: Typically includes completing words, word substitution, and spelling out missing words in sentences, mainly assessing the mastery of vocabulary.
- Communication Skills: Often uses situational dialogues, with final exam questions involving picture-based dialogue completion or completing dialogues based on given words. Solving Technique: First, determine the linguistic context, communication task, and cultural and behavioral norms of English-speaking countries. Then, accurately understand the meaning of sentences, analyze and judge, consider functional meanings, and select the correct option.
- Syntax: Assesses sentence transformation, including converting into interrogative sentences (yes/no, wh-questions, tag questions), equivalent sentences, exclamatory sentences, singular/plural forms, simple/compound sentences. Solving Technique: First, consider the five basic sentence patterns and transformation rules, then analyze word forms, meanings, functions, and subject-verb agreement.
- Cloze Test: A key component of the final exam, assessing reading skills while testing mastery of vocabulary, syntax, and grammar. Among the four options, two or three may seem close, but pay attention to contextual meaning and logical pairing.
- Reading Comprehension: Evaluates the ability to understand the main idea of a passage and select correct answers. Post-reading questions may include detailed comprehension, inferential questions, direct answer questions, or word form/meaning and sentence transformation questions. Solving Technique: Improving reading skills relies on daily accumulation. Good reading habits help expand and reinforce vocabulary, enhance reading speed, strengthen language intuition, broaden knowledge, and grasp the central sentence of each paragraph. Pay special attention to the first and last sentences of each paragraph, skim for the main idea, then carefully read for details, review the entire passage, compare with questions, and make logical deductions to select the correct answer.
5. Final Exam Questions: Often include intelligence tests with diverse, rich, and varied question types to develop intellectual abilities. Here, the focus is on written exam content. Listening and speaking sections vary by exam location and will be addressed separately.
