Does newborn jaundice affect the brain?

Patient's question:

My child is currently 12 days old. The hospital doctor said that the jaundice is high and there is pneumonia. The baby's response ability is poor, cries little, and sleeps a lot. The day before yesterday, a CT scan was performed at the hospital. The doctor said that jaundice has entered the brain and that even if the jaundice is cured, the baby will not be smart. I want to ask if the baby's jaundice level of 293 will affect the brain?

Doctor's answer:

If the baby develops jaundice within 24 hours after birth or if the jaundice progresses rapidly. It persists for a long time without interruption. It may even be accompanied by anemia, abnormal body temperature, poor feeding, vomiting, and abnormal color of urine and stool. In some cases, jaundice that has subsided or reduced may reappear and worsen. This is often indicative of pathological jaundice. Common causes of pathological jaundice include hemolytic disease in the baby, infections in the baby, biliary tract malformations, and hepatitis in the baby.
