What causes itching in a girl's genital area

Patient's question:

Recently, I've noticed that my daughter has small red bumps in her genital area. Sometimes she scratches them herself, so I guess it's itchy. What could be the cause? Can I use erythromycin ointment for this? Thank you

Doctor's answer:

Consider the following for a girl's vulvar itching:
1. The vulva of a young girl is underdeveloped and cannot fully cover the urethral and vaginal openings, making it easy for bacteria to invade.
2. Low estrogen levels lead to thin vaginal epithelium and reduced glycogen, increasing susceptibility to infection and causing vulvar itching.
3. Poor hygiene habits in infants and young children, such as unclean vulvar areas, fecal contamination, vulvar trauma, or pinworm infections, can all trigger inflammation.
4. Accidental insertion of foreign objects into the vagina may cause secondary infections. Additionally, indirect transmission can occur through contact with a sick mother's clothing or bathwater.
It is recommended that girls maintain vulvar cleanliness. Undergarments should be washed separately and disinfected under sunlight.
