Features: Zhang Zuolin was short in stature but intelligent, with bright, piercing eyes. His sharp and decisive character was evident in his expressions. Despite his background as a military officer, he was as refined as a scholar. He made decisions swiftly, possessed extraordinary alertness, and when angered, his hair stood on end, intimidating thousands. Thus, people feared his authority but cherished his kindness. This book tells the story of Zhang Zuolin, a humble and destitute warlord in old China, who rose to power through his cunning and wisdom during a time of national crisis. Starting with command of a private army, he eventually became the dominant ruler of Manchuria and Mongolia, renowned for his might. He launched two direct-Feng wars and led his troops into the Guandong region, reaching the pinnacle of his ambitious career—becoming the Grand Marshal of the Republic of China's National Army and Navy (the highest national leader at the time). However, his fortune did not last long. Under pressure from the Northern Expeditionary Army, his forces retreated step by step, forcing him to return to the Guandong region once more. Additionally, due to his repeated refusal to sign unequal treaties under Japanese coercion, he was assassinated by the Japanese in Houghton Station. This book is highly readable, with vivid character portrayals. Although it is a novel, it is considered a credible historical account, free from fictional embellishments, leaving readers to ponder deeply upon finishing it.
