Features: Xinjiang Hetian Jade and the New Interpretation of the Jade Road
When Pangu separated the heavens and the earth, beautiful jade was born on the Chinese land. China has always been renowned for its exquisite jade, and the Kunlun Mountains have long been celebrated for their jade. The world-famous Xinjiang Hetian jade, which originates from the Kunlun Mountains, holds a significant place in Chinese jade culture. The Chinese nation has a long history of recognizing jade. As early as 8,200 years ago in the Stone Age, China had jade artifacts, and by 4,500 years ago, the craftsmanship of jade had reached a remarkably high level. Throughout its 5,000 years of civilization, Chinese culture has been accompanied by jade culture. Jade culture has enriched Chinese culture, allowed the world to understand Chinese culture, condensed Chinese culture, and showcased Chinese culture.
The saying "gentlemen compare themselves to jade" has spread across the Chinese land and almost become a motto for self-cultivation. Regardless of how times change or how the world transforms, the spiritual essence of jade, the exquisite craftsmanship of jade, the unparalleled design of jade, the profound artistic conception of jade, the solemnity of jade ritual objects, the purity of jade ornaments, the value of jade decorative pieces, and the elegance of jade culture have all written new chapters for Chinese culture over its 5,000 years.
Xinjiang Hetian jade plays a vital role in Chinese jade culture. Jade artifacts carved from Hetian jade across generations have become treasures of the Chinese nation. This is because Xinjiang Hetian jade holds a significant position in Chinese jade culture, and it can be said that Hetian jade is an irreplaceable and essential component of Chinese jade culture.
New archaeological research suggests that during the late Neolithic period, China experienced a long period (spanning thousands of years) characterized by the extensive use of jade. It can be said that the "jade period" was the origin of Chinese civilization.
We know that in the history of economic and cultural exchanges between the East and the West, there is a world-famous "Silk Road." Historical geographers have determined that there was a "Jade Road" even before the Silk Road. The formation and development of the Silk Road span over 1,600 years, while the Jade Road appeared on the historical stage 4,400 years earlier. The 6,000-year history of the Jade Road demonstrates that the jade from Hetian served as a medium for cultural and commercial exchanges between the frontier regions of China, the Central Plains, and the East and West. The Silk Road later emerged and developed as silk traders utilized the ancient route of the Jade Road.
Some experts have that since the Stone Age of primitive society in the northern slope of the Kunlun Mountains in Xinjiang Hetian, the ancestors living there, in pursuit of livelihood and survival, undertook major migrations and transfers, engaging in communication and interaction with other primitive tribes, gradually expanding their range of activity and thus opening up two Jade Roads.
The first Jade Road started from the Yulongkash River and the Karakash River, heading east through Minfeng and Qiemo, passing through Ruqiang, and then north to Loulan, crossing Lop Nur to the north, and finally advancing east along the Shule River into the Lao Yumen (near Yangguan) in Gansu.
The second Jade Road also started from the Yulongkash River and the Karakash River, heading east through Minfeng and Qiemo, passing through Ruqiang, and then north to Loulan, reaching Yangpingli, traveling through Xishuiquan, crossing the green salt spring of Lüzhou, and then heading north through Yiertoguoshi, Kuitaokilipu, and Dikan, before finally reaching Gaochang (modern-day Turpan). From Gaochang, it moved east to Hami, passing through the Camel Circle, Shuizhi, and Yaziquan, entering Gansu Mingshui, and finally reaching the current Yumen.
