1. Architecture is a city's calling card. Buildings create cities, giving them personality and vitality, enabling society to develop and civilization to be passed down. The buildings included in "Shanghai's Famous Buildings and Mansions in a Century" are representative old Shanghai structures, all designated as outstanding historical buildings by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and national or municipal key cultural relic protection units. Based on their different functional uses, they are divided into two volumes: "Famous Buildings" and "Famous Mansions," each containing 80 historical structures. With the passage of time, some of these buildings and mansions have changed hands multiple times or had their names altered. Out of respect for history and to assist readers, this book retains their original names, supplemented by current names or present users for reference.
2. Architecture is the accumulation of culture, deeply influenced by the specific social backdrop of old China and the profound impact of global architectural culture. It has formed a unique architectural culture in Shanghai, serving as a microcosm of the development of modern world architecture, blending the essence of both Chinese and Western architectural traditions. The folk customs and styles of different countries and schools are fully displayed in this city, embodying the "embrace diversity, pursue excellence" spirit of Shanghai's architectural style. Indeed, behind these towering skyscrapers and luxurious mansions, the shadows of foreigners, compradors, officials, tycoons, and landlords from a semi-feudal and semi-colonial society are subtly visible. However, this book strives to objectively reflect historical facts without intention of glorifying or exaggerating their roles.
3. Architecture is solidified history. Behind every historical building lies an untold story. In addition to introducing architectural features, this book emphasizes uncovering the humanistic and historical context embedded in the structures. It allows senior readers to revisit forgotten memories, encourages young readers to explore the doors of history, and helps overseas Chinese trace the echoes of their childhood or their ancestors' lives. Due to the passage of time, some of the materials and data included in this book may not be entirely accurate. We kindly ask for readers' understanding and welcome corrections.
4. Architecture is the crystallization of art. Architecture is both an appreciation and creation of art. The development of Shanghai's architectural heritage over a century has integrated the imaginative ideas of and the exquisite craftsmanship of skilled artisans. From the perspective of architectural art, this book introduces the styles and characteristics of the buildings, hoping to enhance readers' appreciation of architectural art.
