I quietly pushed open the door. The windows were covered with thick velvet curtains, so even when I opened the door to let the light from the hallway in, the room remained dim and oppressive. Six-Ear sat in a chair at the corner of the room, bare-chested. "You're back." Six-Ear put down the scissors and picked up a folding razor, the kind barbers use, to carefully shave the short hair on his chest. His head was raised, his gaze passing over me as he looked somewhere else. The scissor and long razor were both bought specifically for him—his hair grows so fast, nearly an inch per hour, so it must be cut short first and then shaved. Beside him was the window sill covered by the curtains. Occasionally, through the gaps stirred by the wind, one could glimpse outside. Six-Ear had been living here for three days, always sitting in this spot—the easiest place to see outside. But when the curtains stirred in the wind, he rarely looked out. Even when he did, it was just a glance. From morning till night, he sat there, shaving his body. Starting with his left palm, he shaved both his hands and chest clean, as well as his legs. For his legs, he only used the scissors, cutting them to the shortest possible length. His hands were very nimble; his arms could bend to any position behind him, allowing him to reach and shave his back without my help. Finally, he shaved his face. On sunny days, he would still use a mirror to shave, but now, he took a piece of toilet paper, wiped the blade, and sat in the chair, shaving his entire face clean. His eyes didn’t close while shaving; instead, he stared straight ahead, as if there were an invisible mirror there. It took over an hour to shave a full circle, and by the time he finished, the skin on his freshly shaved palm had already grown new hair. So he had to shave it again, repeating the process over and over. As he shaved, the palm holding the razor kept growing hair. The thought alone was terrifying, but now, Six-Ear just sat there, silently shaving, over and over.
Every day, the hair he shaved was collected in a large black garbage bag, filling it completely. I tied the bag tightly and took it downstairs to throw out at ten o’clock at night.
"I’m going to order two bowls of tonkotsu ramen takeout. Anything else you’d like? I have their takeout menu here." I waved the beautifully printed promotional menu in my hand.
"Order one more for me. I’d like two bowls. Is that okay? My appetite’s much bigger than before. Growing hair like this is very energy-consuming." Six-Ear gave a short laugh.
"Don’t hurry. There will be a solution eventually.” I said. Six-Ear’s gaze shifted slightly, settling on my face.
"I’ll go call for the takeout.” I turned around and walked out. He placed all his hope in me, but I couldn’t bring myself to look into his eyes.
I woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. I heard a very faint whimpering coming from behind the closed door of his room—perhaps a low giggle, I couldn’t tell. I wanted to knock, but my hand stopped at the last second. Sleeping on the sofa bed in the study, I thought carefully about all the so-called "non-human" figures I knew, yet still had no idea who could help Six-Ear.
Lu Yun excelled at illusions that could drive people mad without causing physical harm; Shui Sheng retained some degree of physical transformation ability, oh, and he was also an excellent swimmer; Xiahou Ying and Lu Yun had abilities that were like different sides of the same coin, subtly influencing others’ behavior through suggestion; and there was also D, whose depths were unknown and even more unfamiliar than Xiahou Ying’s. That was all of them. Thinking about it, most of my friends were still normal people, so which of these individuals could help with this bizarre condition of growing all over his body?
The day before yesterday, I went to the hospital where Six-Ear was being treated and found his attending doctor. Under the guise of a journalist, I asked for his opinion. This seasoned expert actually had no opinion at all, just kept expressing his amazement. While atavistic phenomena are rare, they do occur. But as for Six-Ear, who had suddenly grown into a hairy human overnight—if he hadn’t seen it with his own eyes, he would have dismissed it as utterly absurd.
