How to Push During Labor

Patient's question:

No

Doctor's answer:

Steps for exerting effort: Lie on your back, hold the pillow or bedpost with both hands, and push during the peak of contractions. Adopt the supine position and take deep breaths. After inhaling air into your chest, hold your breath temporarily, then push towards your anus as you would when having a bowel movement. When you can no longer hold your breath, exhale, then immediately inhale and push again. During delivery, follow the instructions of your doctor and nurses to alternate between exerting effort and relaxation. Push during contractions, for about 10 seconds each time. If the pain continues, keep inhaling and pushing. When the contraction stops, relax your entire body and rest for a moment. Proper rest allows you to exert effort effectively—in other words, timing your pushes correctly can alleviate the pain. Therefore, effort must be coordinated with the pain. During the intervals, the fetus receives plenty of oxygen and stores energy, so the mother should relax as much as possible during this time, and the more relaxed she is, the better.
