Features: The main operating system becomes the foundation of the hosted operating system. One room in this "hotel" must be allocated as an isolated zone. As we all know, when installing a new program, the operating system often encounters problems, which may be due to incorrect use of the installer, conflicts between function libraries, adware, or simply random factors (such as karmic retribution). It is wise to avoid using programs obtained from unreliable sources as much as possible, as long as you can obtain them through other channels. Just allocate a separate virtual machine in the simulator, and such programs cannot escape the virtual machine!
3.5.2 Simulators for Administrators
From an administrator's perspective, the simulator is primarily a testing area for various experiments: installing dozens of different UNIX variants and thoroughly testing them. Install a system, delete it, and then reinstall it with slight modifications to its configuration. To get a job, you not only need a diploma but also be an expert in your field, as well as have practical experience. The same applies to data recovery work. It is not recommended to run DiskEditor (let alone DiskDoctor) on your main operating system without special preparation. This is because such tools cannot guarantee that they can fix disk errors without damaging your disk. Simply put, the simulator is an excellent testing area, which was once a difficult-to-realize dream. In large organizations, administrators typically have mirrored servers where all patches are first tested. Small organizations often cannot afford the additional machines for this purpose. In such cases, simulators come into play. Additionally, simulators can be used to test various experimental programs. If the weaknesses of a program are confirmed, emergency measures can be taken to correct them. Interactions between the virtual machine and the main operating system and other virtual machines are generally conducted through a LAN (which is also virtual). Assuming your computer has 512MB to 1024MB of RAM, you can create an intranet model (as shown in Figure 3.9) using SQL, a web server, an "isolated zone," a firewall, and several workstations. This test is perfectly suitable for a home computer. In other words, for testing purposes, simulators are better than anything else. In a simulator, you can both attack and manage networks.
3.5.3 Simulators for Software Developers
Driver developers are the ones who love simulators the most. The kernel not only does not correct its own errors but also retaliates by destroying the entire hard disk, making years of accumulated data unrecoverable. For driver developers, like railway workers who are accustomed to the clatter of train wheels, frequent reboots and crashes are commonplace. Additionally, most kernel-level debuggers require two computers connected via LAN or at least a modem. Of course, from the perspective of professional developers, using two computers is not overly extravagant. However, how do you arrange them? Constantly turning your head left and right is not a comfortable thing. Sometimes, it feels like twisting your head off your neck! P43
