What should be done if a child has low platelets?

Patient's question:

A 4-year-old boy with viral influenza has had a high fever for four days, but the fever keeps recurring without subsiding. He went to the hospital for a blood test and found his platelet count to be as low as 53 (normal range: 100-300), CRP at 11, and reticulocytes at 0.4. The platelet count has not yet recovered. What should be done?

Doctor's answer:

Artificial intervention still requires medication. We'll know if it has rebounded after the blood test. The most common platelet-reducing disease in children is Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). This is a blood system disease with an unknown specific cause. It is often related to immune function. It is recommended that you take your child to a local regular hospital for a bone marrow puncture examination. Diagnosis must come first before treatment!
