Features: The author of Little John, Van Eeden (1860—1932), was one of the most beloved and influential writers in the Netherlands at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He excelled in both poetry and prose, holding a significant position in the Dutch literary scene, where creative output had long been considered underdeveloped. However, his primary profession was a doctor and psychoanalyst. Later in life, he gradually abandoned literary writing, shifting his personal interests entirely to the medical analysis and study of dreams, achieving remarkable success in this field. In terms of philosophy, he was deeply influenced by the natural theology of the famous 17th-century Dutch philosopher Spinoza and held a strong interest in Indian Eastern mysticism. He was one of the earliest to translate the prose poems of the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, Gitanjali, into Europe.
