How to Deal with a Newborn's Congestion

Patient's question:

My daughter is only three months old. Recently, she has been feeling like her nose isn't breathing properly while sleeping, and she is breathing through her mouth. During the day, she also has been sneezing. It has been two weeks now, and there has been no improvement. How should I handle nasal congestion in newborns?

Doctor's answer:

Newborn nasal congestion should be cleaned as much as possible. The temperature and humidity in the bedroom should be adjusted to the appropriate range. If the baby's nasal congestion is severe, the baby needs to be picked up and held upright. This can also help alleviate some nasal mucosal edema. If the baby has a runny nose, you can first apply some warm physiological saline to moisten the baby's nasal cavity. At the same time, gently massage the baby's nose and the sides of the cheeks. Try to let the runny nose and other things naturally discharge. It is not recommended to use instruments similar to nasal aspirators. External help during the nasal cleaning process may cause discomfort and fear.
