The guiding principles for writing this book are: ① It is primarily aimed at upper-level English majors, but can also be used by postgraduate students. ② It is written in English, with English examples used as much as possible. ③ In terms of content, it should not only impart fundamental knowledge but also reflect the new developments in linguistics. ④ In terms of perspective, it should not be confined to a single school of thought. ⑤ When teaching this book, instructors can adjust the depth and breadth of coverage based on their school’s teaching plan and students’ proficiency levels.
