What should I do if my newborn has diarrhea?

Patient's question:

My baby is 50 days old and has been on mixed feeding. Previously, when she was normal, she had 2-3 bowel movements per day. Since the 40s days, she has been experiencing diarrhea, with 7-8 bowel movements daily, sometimes loose and sometimes pasty, but the color is still mostly golden. After doing a stool test at the hospital, what should we do next?

Doctor's answer:

After children suffer from diarrhea, a reasonable diet and appropriate medication can shorten the course of the illness and facilitate rapid recovery, although they have little impact on children's health. If not handled properly, dehydration, acidosis, and electrolyte disorders often occur, severely endangering children's lives; or it may lead to delayed complications, causing malnutrition in children and affecting their growth and development. Therefore, parents need to understand and master some home treatment and care methods for children with diarrhea. The principles of treating diarrhea are: (1) prevent dehydration; (2) correct dehydration; (3) continue with diet; (4) use medication reasonably. According to these principles, for children with mild conditions and no obvious dehydration, the following measures can be taken at home for treatment. Severe cases require hospitalization.
