Why do I keep passing gas and have a slightly bloated stomach?

Patient's question:

I've been passing gas all night, and my lower abdomen feels a bit sore. Could there be something seriously wrong? It's silent, should I go to the hospital for a check-up?

Doctor's answer:

There are generally two reasons for frequent flatulence. One is due to consuming gas-producing foods regularly, such as sweet potatoes, onions, cabbage, beans, and other bean products, which can lead to flatulence. The other possibility is suffering from "Irritable Bowel Syndrome" (IBS), which clinically also exhibits symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, and flatulence. In terms of diet, it is recommended to eat small, frequent meals and avoid overeating. When eating, it is advisable to chew slowly and thoroughly to prevent swallowing too much air. Additionally, foods that are easily gas-producing should also be avoided.
