This book tells a fairy tale. It describes the pastoral life and moving friendship between several small animals living in nature—the mole living underground, the water rat living by the river, the badger living in the primeval forest, and the toad living in Toad Hall. The mole, water rat, badger, and toad are four good friends. The mole met the water rat on a spring day and became good friends, starting to live together. The water rat is honest, kind, understanding, and always willing to help, taking meticulous care of the mole, while the mole is loyal and deeply admires him. The toad living in Toad Hall is arrogant and self-centered, squandering the small inheritance left by his father. He also likes blind adventures and is easily bored with new things; as soon as he sees something new, he will stop at nothing to get it. During an adventure with the mole and the water rat, he sees a car and becomes fascinated. From then on, he spends wildly, buying cars constantly, getting into accidents, and being sent to the hospital repeatedly. The toad's behavior worries his friends, who always try to help him break his bad habits and reform.
The mole, having long admired the badger living in the primeval forest, but unable to meet him, prepares to visit his home alone while the water rat is asleep. However, the primeval forest is dark and frightening, with various animals lurking. The simple mole is scared by the sounds and footsteps of animals and hides in a tree hole. When the water rat finally finds him, it is snowing, and the two are lost in the snow but happen to stumble upon the badger's home. The badger and the mole instantly bond and feel very compatible.
The toad becomes obsessed with driving, to the point of stealing someone else's new car. He ends up in jail but is later helped by the jailer's daughter, dressing as a laundress to escape. After many hardships, he manages to flee. Upon returning home, he discovers that Toad Hall has been taken over by weasels, who are causing chaos there. In the end, guided by the badger, the four animals use their wits to cleverly defeat the enemy and reclaim Toad Hall. The toad also reforms his faults. Meanwhile, the mole matures through life's trials under the guidance of the clever water rat and the steady badger.
