A few dry English sentences are not enough. Don't always put improving English as the purpose of reading. Reading is primarily about absorbing knowledge, and in the process of absorbing knowledge, the language is naturally absorbed as well. — Xu Guozhang
Thinking in English is an ideal that many English learners aspire to, as it is the foundation for expressing thoughts fluently in English. For Chinese students living in a non-English environment, it is indeed challenging to think partly or entirely in English, but it is not an unattainable goal. From my own experience in learning English, I have found that persistent extensive reading is one of the most effective ways to achieve this goal. — He Qixin (Vice President and Doctoral Supervisor of Beijing Foreign Studies University)
For elementary and intermediate English learners, I especially recommend English easy readers. The material should be simple and easy to understand, with a strong narrative element. The faster you read, the better. This is a proven method for learning English. — Hu Wenzhong (Professor of Beijing Foreign Studies University)
The story takes place in post-World War I England. Sir Clifford Chatterley, who returned from the battlefield, was injured in the war, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair for life. He and his newlywed wife, Constance, returned to their ancestral estate to settle down. Young, beautiful, and kind-hearted, Constance knew that she was destined for a long, lonely, and ascetic life, yet she accepted her fate and willingly stayed by her husband's side. One day, Constance went to find the estate's gamekeeper, Mellors, but accidentally caught a glimpse of his bare torso, stirring her emotions deeply. Mellors was clearly also attracted to the elegant and gentle Constance.
To preserve the family legacy, Clifford asked Constance to bear him a child, but she refused outright. With the help of his sister Hilda, Clifford finally hired a widow, Mrs. Bolton, to attend to him. With some free time, Constance often went for walks in the woods. Through her interactions with Mellors, she gradually developed feelings for him. Day by day, Constance found herself increasingly unable to tolerate the life in the grand but rigid and pale Leghorn estate. She felt herself dying, yearning for the outdoors and the vitality represented by Mellors. The two were drawn to each other, and eventually, Constance fell into Mellors' arms.
They made love repeatedly, as Lawrence masterfully describes in the book: perfect, healthy, all-consuming, and respectful love between two bodies. From pure physical attraction, their connection evolved into a collision of souls. Mellors, with his tenderness and passion, transformed Constance into a truly complete woman, while Constance was astonished to discover that she deeply loved this rough but profound and passionate man. They became lovers of both body and spirit.
When Constance slipped out of the estate secretly at night to run to Mellors, who was waiting for her, she had completely surrendered to this feeling. The unforgettable scene of Constance and Mellors running naked in the rain epitomizes their desire for freedom and humanity. Constance rushed outside, stripped off her robe, and her perfect, flawless body seemed natural and harmonious in the lush forest. The two ran and played like joyful sprites, fully expressing Constance's longing for freedom and humanity. Afterward, they adorned each other with flowers, standing naked and bare before one another, like Adam and Eve returning to their primal state. Without the boundaries of clothing, the class barriers between them also dissolved.
