What to do about rotavirus in children?

Patient's question:

My daughter suddenly started having diarrhea, with up to ten episodes a day. What should we do about this rotavirus infection?

Doctor's answer:

Rotavirus in children can cause diarrhea of varying severity. The onset is usually abrupt, and the symptoms are relatively severe. Clinically, two treatment methods can be distinguished: one for mild diarrhea, and the other for severe diarrhea.
Mild diarrhea is typically characterized by increased bowel movements, fever, but the child's mental state remains stable, and there are no obvious signs of dehydration. Treatment generally involves dietary adjustments, such as consuming easily digestible foods, reducing feeding frequency and volume, and oral rehydration with rice water. Most cases resolve within 5-7 days without the need for special treatment.
Severe diarrhea, however, requires fluid replacement to address dehydration symptoms.
