Patient's question:
My child is three years old and always has difficulty speaking clearly. After a check-up at the hospital, the doctor said it's a case of intellectual disability in children, symptoms similar to those of mentally retarded children?Doctor's answer:
Children with intellectual disabilities often show delayed walking abilities, and babies with congenital intellectual impairments exhibit abnormal facial and physical features. They appear dull and expressionless, lacking the ability to focus on their surroundings like normal children at one month old. Children with intellectual disabilities show little interest in people and things around them. For example, children with Down syndrome often have wide-set eyes, slanted eyes, a flattened nose, a tongue that frequently protrudes from their mouth, and excessive drooling, which is commonly referred to as the "international face." Children with hydrocephalus have abnormally large head circumferences, while microcephalic children have extremely small heads.
