The golden scorpion quickly discovered the secret room in the closet. Overjoyed, he judged, based on past experience, that such a large room must hide valuable treasures. He was certain the two children had already entered. He knew the room must also have a secret switch to lock it from the inside. The golden scorpion squeezed into the room and, from the inside, felt around the doorframe. Soon, he found a small projection and pressed it. The main door of the room shut. The golden scorpion took out his lighter, lit it, and checked around. Then, he quietly descended the stairs. PiPiRu and Lu Xixi had already reached the Square Hall. "Brother, do you hear? It sounds like footsteps," Lu Xixi whispered to PiPiRu. PiPiRu turned off his flashlight and listened intently. Yes, faint footsteps were coming from the stairs. Hearing footsteps in such an unnervingly quiet room sent a chill down their spines. "I'm scared," Lu Xixi leaned against her brother. "Don't be afraid, I'm here." PiPiRu encouraged his sister, and himself. In truth, his heart was pounding. The footsteps stopped. "It's okay, let's open the door," PiPiRu said, turning on the flashlight switch. They arrived at the Golden Gate. PiPiRu took out the key, inserted it into the heavy lock, and twisted it. It opened! The siblings were both surprised and relieved. PiPiRu pushed open the door and shone the flashlight inside. It was a winding passage. "Let's go in and see!" PiPiRu said. "Let's go home, Mom and Dad must be off work by now," Lu Xixi hesitated when she saw it was another passage. "Just take a quick look, and we'll come right back!" PiPiRu insisted, pulling his sister inside. Meanwhile, the golden scorpion was also descending step by step into the depths of the secret room. Suddenly, he heard footsteps below. The golden scorpion stopped, took off his shoes, tied them to his belt, and went barefoot. He guessed it was the two children below. But when he turned a corner, he saw another lighter flash below the stairs. Whoa, it was an adult! The golden scorpion was taken aback. The person below also noticed someone above and turned off the lighter. Neither moved, and in the darkness, they stared at each other. Though neither could see the other, they both felt each other's gaze. This was when PiPiRu and his sister couldn't hear any footsteps. Finally, both realized that this stalemate was not in their favor. So, the person below began moving deeper, and the golden scorpion descended step by step, though neither dared to use a lighter. PiPiRu and Lu Xixi hadn't walked far in the passage when the path ended. PiPiRu shone his flashlight upward and saw a soft ladder made of iron chains hanging above him. He reached out and gave it a tug—it was sturdy. P032-033
