Is it normal for a four-year-old child to wet the bed?

Patient's question:

The child is four years old. I don't know what's wrong with him these past few nights. He wets the bed every night and also cries and screams. I wonder if he was scared or if he wet the bed because of a nightmare? I'd like to ask about the issue of bedwetting. Is it normal for a four-year-old to still wet the bed?

Doctor's answer:

If the child does not wet the bed regularly, it is generally considered not a problem. Considering the child may be startled or have some kind of relationship during the day, do not let the child drink too much water before going to bed each night. Calling the child to the toilet at a fixed time may greatly reduce bedwetting. Do not let the child drink too much water before going to bed. Always give the child a reason. Train your child to urinate during the day, develop good habits, and wait a while to see if it improves.
