Features: The author, Zeng Pu (1871-1935), styled Mengpu, was a native of Changshu, Jiangsu. Born into an official family, he entered government service through the imperial examination system. He studied French at the Tongwen School, an institution established by the Self-Strengthening Movement, and participated in some activities of the Reform Party. After 1900, Zeng Pu gave up his official post to establish the Novel Press (Xiaoshu Lin), publishing novels and introducing foreign works. Later, he opened the Mei Shan Bookstore in Shanghai and founded the magazine 《Zhen Mei Shan》.
