How can you tell if a newborn has jaundice?

Patient's question:

The baby is 28 days old, and I feel a bit yellow. The baby was a bit yellow 3 days after birth, but it seemed to gradually fade. Everyone at home says there is no jaundice, and it has never been tested for jaundice. But I think the baby is still a bit yellow. The baby has no symptoms of lethargy, so how can I check for jaundice?

Doctor's answer:

If the child has jaundice, the entire skin will appear yellow to the naked eye, just like how we look at our own skin. Generally, there are no other issues. If you are unsure, it's best to go to a good hospital and have a doctor measure the transcutaneous bilirubin level with an instrument. If it's slightly elevated, oral jaundice-reducing medication may be needed. However, the most accurate method is a blood test.
