Do newborns with diarrhea need to take medicine?

Patient's question:

The baby is still very young, only a few months old, and recently has had diarrhea, which makes me very concerned. I have been feeding him less, and then there's the issue of the color being a bit off. Since the baby is so small, I'm afraid that medication will be harmful to him. Do newborns with diarrhea need to take medicine?

Doctor's answer:

If this month the baby has diarrhea quite frequently every day, medication may still be necessary. Additionally, it's important to avoid catching a cold, drink more water, and if breastfeeding, the mother should avoid spicy and irritating foods. It's best not to eat small, frequent meals in this case. However, after more than a month, the number of bowel movements will significantly decrease, generally not exceeding three times a day. If there's no improvement, further tests on the baby's stool should be conducted at the hospital.
