Features: In the history of the development of the I Ching, the Xuan Shu theory of the Han Dynasty, representing the Xiang Shu school of thought, served as a crucial transitional phase. This school of thought inherited the tradition of the pre-Qin era, promoting the understanding of heaven's laws to illuminate human affairs, and further developed the core ideas inherent in the I Ching. It was widely applied in daily life, while simultaneously deepening and expanding the contradictions inherent in the I Ching's content and form, thereby giving rise to the Yi Li school of thought in the Wei and Jin periods, represented by Wang Bi. If one lacks an objective historical understanding of Han Dynasty I Ching studies, blindly adhering to the biases of predecessors, either revering it as the ultimate authority or dismissing it as negligible, it becomes impossible to grasp the patterns of the evolution of the I Ching or to uncover its intrinsic essence.
Is there indeed a core idea or intrinsic essence within the I Ching? If affirmative, then through what historical dynamics did this core idea or essence manifest in the Han Dynasty as a tangled mix of religious, magical, and divinatory practices within the Xiang Shu form? How did the Xiang Shu studies of Han Dynasty I Ching reach their ultimate decline, ultimately being replaced by Wang Bi's Yi Li school? Why, after the Wei and Jin periods, did the Yi Li school dominate while the Xiang Shu school persisted, continuing to thrive until the Qing Dynasty, which then sparked a revival of Han Dynasty I Ching studies? Today, when researching Han Dynasty I Ching, how should we transcend the biases of predecessors and focus on the overall development of the I Ching, appropriately assessing its historical significance, and uncover its rational core through the seemingly elaborate yet convoluted Xiang Shu forms?
All these questions pertain to the fundamental understanding of the essence of the I Ching and its evolutionary patterns. Due to the limitations of subjective and objective conditions, each researcher finds it difficult to provide comprehensive and accurate answers. However, to elevate the study of Han Dynasty I Ching from a descriptive level to a certain theoretical height, these seemingly grand and impractical questions cannot be taken lightly without serious consideration.
