Features: The story takes place during the Anglo-French North American Colonial War (1755-1763). Young British officer Major Duncan Heyward accompanies two girls—Cora and Alice—as they travel through the wilderness to join their father, Colonel Munro, the British commander of Fort William Henry. A Huron Indian named Magua serves as their guide. Along the way, they encounter a white hunter known as "Hawkeye" and his two Mohawk Indian friends (Chingachgook and Uncas). Hawkeye points out that their route is wrong, and Magua believes his plot (to lure the group into an ambush) has been discovered, so he flees in haste. Guided by Hawkeye and his companions, Heyward and the others endure hardships and finally reach Fort William Henry (during which the two sisters were captured by the Hurons but rescued). However, the good times don't last. Under siege by French and Indian allied forces, the British garrison surrenders, and the women and children are massacred. Cora and her sister are once again captured by Magua. Hawkeye and his group give chase, and a thrilling, suspenseful, and (twisting) rescue mission ensues.
