"David, I say!" Mom's standard reprimand echoed in my ear. She frowned as she took out a black and soft banana from my gym bag. My sister Xiawa (her name is Xiawa, but we've gotten used to calling her Xiawa) was laughing maliciously beside me. It looked like tonight's plans were ruined. I thought.
Mom pinched the banana with her fingers and placed it on the dining table, ready to deliver a deeply educational speech. Just then, we heard a bang. The sound sounded like someone firing a gun. We were all stunned.
"I think the sound came from upstairs, near the bathroom," Mom said, glancing around. "Where's your dad? That guy is never around when you need him!"
"What do we do now?" Xiawa asked softly, putting down the detective novel she was reading. "Should we call the police? Oh, what if there's a body up there?"
"I need to find my glasses. Where did I put them?" Mom said. Xiawa didn't speak, instead pointing at Mom's head.
"Oh, here. Thanks!" Mom said, putting on her glasses. She must be able to see much clearer now.
"I'll call the police. You two stay here and don't move. I'll go to the hallway to make the call. I'm not afraid. If you hear me yell, quickly escape through the kitchen window to the neighbor's house. I'm leaving!"
Mom took a deep breath and slowly opened the door, stepping outside. We stood there, listening carefully to the sounds from the hallway. The cat, Mingqi, was now lying on my notebook, meowing softly. Besides its meowing, we heard nothing else.
"Xiawa," I whispered to my sister, "don't you think it's strange how this cat isn't scared at all?"
Before Xiawa could reply, Mom returned from the hallway.
"Will the police come soon?" I asked her quickly. "What can we do now?"
Mom said anxiously, "Xiawa Maria Matide, where did you put the phone?"
