Sima Qian (c. 145 BC – ?), a historian, litterateur, and thinker of the Western Han Dynasty, wrote Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), which is China's first comprehensive historical record in the form of biographies and chronicles. It documents the lives and achievements of important figures in ancient times, exerting a profound influence and serving as a valuable reference for later historical research. Perhaps due to his study of the past, Sima Qian regarded death as commonplace but believed that how others and future generations evaluated a person was far more important.
We often prefer to choose a life "heavy as Mount Tai" because it represents great achievements, the recognition and admiration of many, and higher honor and status. No one wishes to be "light as dandelion fluff," for something so insubstantial cannot command attention! But does fluff, which seems so insignificant, truly hold no value? Feathers, duster brushes, down jackets, and feather decorations are common and widely used items. Do you think they have value? The answer is yes. The value of an object lies not in its weight but in its practical utility. Similarly, the worth of a person cannot be measured by the scale of their achievements but by their contributions to society. An unassuming screw that fulfills its duty in its position realizes its value. The majestic Mount Tai stands alone, but the beautiful landscape is composed of countless inconspicuous ravines. A person's worth does not lie in the praise they receive but in whether they have truly devoted themselves.
