Features: Athens Climate Athens has a typical Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. In Mediterranean climate regions, summers are dominated by the subtropical high pressure, resulting in dry, hot conditions. The rainfall in the second half of the year accounts for only 20% to 40% of the annual total, with less than 10% falling during the summer. Winters are influenced by frequent westerly air masses, leading to abundant rainfall and mild temperatures. Rivers in Mediterranean climate zones experience high flow in winter and low flow in summer. From late June to early October, Athens is in summer. During this time, the entire country of Greece experiences hot weather, with southern temperatures sometimes reaching over 42°C. The entire summer is extremely dry, with almost no rainfall. Despite the high temperatures, the air is dry and humidity is low due to the influence of the marine climate, so people do not feel stuffy or uncomfortable. Even in 40°C heat, standing under a large tree or in other shaded areas feels quite cool. In Athens, no one dislikes summer because it allows people to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the sunshine and sea by the beach. October and November mark Athens' golden autumn season, as the dry, hot summer gives way to much-needed rainfall. After the autumn rains, withered grasslands begin to turn green, and lush fruits are visible everywhere—on street corners, in field paths, and in rural homes. As the climate changes, nature displays a variety of colors, with golden, emerald, and crimson leaves painting the narrow mountain areas and plains like beautiful oil paintings. Starting in November, Athens enters winter. Winter in Greece varies significantly between the north and south. In the north, snow begins to fall around late November, and snow on high mountains remains year-round. Winter is the season for winter sports, and Greece now has several famous ski resorts that attract many enthusiasts each year. Unlike the north, the middle and southern parts of Greece do not experience cold winters. In Athens, the coldest temperatures rarely drop below freezing, and snow usually melts as soon as it falls. Further south, in places like Crete, winter is the rainy season, with almost all annual rainfall concentrated in these months. Athens' spring generally begins in March and lasts until the arrival of summer in June. Spring is the most beautiful season of the year, transforming Athens into a sea of flowers. Every family in Athens grows flowers, and during spring, beautiful blooms appear on balconies, windowsills, and courtyards. May 1st is Greece's traditional Flower Festival, when people flock to nature to admire the beauty of flowers. Young girls gather in groups to pick flowers in the fields, weaving them into lovely floral crowns to wear on their heads, resembling fairies descending from the heavens and adding even more poetry to the season.
