4 Tell Yourself, "I Can Do It!"
As the saying goes, "A good start is half the success." If you lack confidence from the beginning, then even before you start, you have already failed halfway. There are very few things that people without confidence can accomplish. Look around us—there are many friends with various talents. Some are excellent students, some are skilled in taekwondo, some can play the piano, some can swim, and others can speak fluent English. Seeing these friends, don’t you think, "Sigh, I can’t do anything. What should I do?" In reality, you don’t need to be so discouraged. Those friends, no matter what they are good at, have all worked very hard to achieve it. As long as we are willing to work hard, we can also achieve the same. Moreover, if we discover something that truly suits us and persist in working hard, we can definitely do better than others. Take a careful look at the following story—can it help you regain your confidence?
● Regain Lost Confidence
A beggar was lying on the side of the road, begging. He was dressed in dirty and tattered clothes, with a miserable and pitiful expression on his face. He had no hope, believing that he could only survive by begging. In the area where the beggar lived, there was an old painter. Every day, the painter could see this beggar from his window. One day, the painter decided to use the beggar as a model for a painting. The painter accurately depicted the beggar’s ragged clothes and the broken iron bucket in front of him. However, there was one part he painted differently—the beggar’s face. The beggar on the street had a blank expression, his eyes dull, as if he had given up on life entirely. But in the painting, the beggar had bright, determined eyes and a resolute expression.
After finishing the painting, the painter called the beggar to his studio and showed him the painting. The beggar shook his head and asked, "Who is this person?" The painter replied, "It’s you." The beggar was surprised and looked at the painting again. After studying it for a while, he suddenly burst into tears. "Ah! Mr. Painter, thank you so much! For the first time, I saw my face looking so confident. Now, it seems like I know what to do. From now on, I must live like the person in the painting."
This is confidence. Confidence is the determination to believe that you can succeed and that hard work will lead to success. With such faith, the beggar in the story above could also become a completely different person. Therefore, everyone should take control of their destiny and live a life of no regrets according to their own wishes. If you have ever given up on something because of a lack of confidence, then starting today, you must change your mindset. That is to always believe: "I can do it!"
