How to deal with your child's "fire"

Patient's question:

My son might be having a bit of a heat issue these past two days. In the morning after waking up, he had a bowel movement but not much. In the afternoon, he had a little bit and it was very difficult to push, almost like he was straining hard. The stool was a bit larger than beans and had a granular texture. Would drinking honey water help?

Doctor's answer:

Children getting "hot" is a very common term. Medically, there is no such term as "getting hot." It primarily refers to when a child exhibits symptoms of heat. For example, this could include constipation, sore throat, red lips, or irritability. The concept of "getting hot" also depends on the characteristics of different organs. If there is an excess of liver fire, the child may become irritable. If there is an excess of heart fire, the child may have difficulty sleeping. If there is fire in the spleen and stomach, it may manifest as bad breath or indigestion, among other symptoms.
