Features: A long, long time ago, I lived on a beautiful blue-green planet called Earth. I didn’t stay there for very long—only thirteen years and one day—but I always felt like the time was too long, because during that time, I was always in fear. If I listed everything I was afraid of, it would be too long: There are some things that even ordinary people would get nervous about: spiders, dentists, exams, and typical teenage fears—like, am I too fat? Do I have bad breath? Or, when I was showing off in school, did my skirt get stuck in my underwear? But these were just small worries, compared to my big worries, they were nothing. There was one big worry I never admitted to anyone, because it was too embarrassing for me. That was—I was afraid of being alone. At that time, I knew I was completely crazy—loneliness couldn’t kill you. But if I was alone, I would immediately feel like I was melting in terror. How could my house be so empty—turning the TV up as loud as possible still felt the same; talking on the phone with my friends for hours still felt the same; even eating all the popcorn I made myself didn’t change anything; and oh, I think you get the idea. These fears all started after my dad left. Naturally, I began to worry that it would be my mom’s turn to abandon me next. Every time she left the apartment, I thought she would definitely be hit by a car, and I would be sent to an orphanage. But she wasn’t hit, and I didn’t go to an orphanage. Later, she met my lovely stepfather—Dess. After we moved in together, I relaxed for 24 whole hours—oh, it felt so good. But the next day, ding—I was back in the red alert zone—worry started again. Worrying that Dess would die in a car accident. A few months later, my sister was born, and I added her to my list of worries.
