How to deal with a 50-day-old baby not pooping for 4 days

Patient's question:

My baby has been having normal bowel movements. It's about 1-2 times a day. I'm breastfeeding and formula-feeding my baby. I started giving juice to the baby at 48 days. But since the baby drank the juice, it hasn't had a bowel movement. After 4 days, I started adding Hainingbao. In the afternoon, the baby had a bowel movement, but it wasn't dry.

Doctor's answer:

Babies reach a certain stage where they may experience the phenomenon of "accumulating feces." This is a sign that their digestive and absorption abilities have improved. At this time, the baby shows no adverse symptoms. When they have another bowel movement, it will still be soft. You can gently feel your baby's abdomen to check if it's hard. Also observe their behavior for any signs of crying, restlessness, or lack of alertness. If none of these are present, you can generally feel at ease.
Additionally, you can offer your baby some water. If you still feel concerned, take them to the hospital for a check-up. Suppositories are not recommended, as they are said to cause dependency. You can try the soft soap stick method instead. Cut a small piece of soap into a long strip, soak it in warm water until it softens, and gently insert it into your baby's rectum. The soap stick should be about half the length of your baby's little finger and about the thickness of your fingernail. Leave it in for about 15 minutes. Then, the stool should come out.
