Publish Date: 2006-05-01
Features: This book is the sixth volume in the series "New Edition of College English: Multifunctional Detailed Explanation of Words." Its purpose is to serve as supplementary material for the sixth volume of the "New Edition of College English Comprehensive Course," catering to students preparing for the College English Test Band 6 (CET-6), as well as those studying for postgraduate entrance exams and current graduate students. Addressing the common challenge of vocabulary being difficult to learn and memorize, the book adheres to the principles of highlighting key points and clarity in its design. It extracts essential vocabulary and frequently used phrases from pre-class listening warm-up exercises, the main text (Text A), language points (Language Focus), and supplementary texts (Text B). These are presented in various forms such as sentence construction, translation, synonyms, near-synonyms, antonyms, homophones, homographs, explanations, and notes, providing contextual language environments to help students master these linguistic knowledge and phenomena, thereby achieving reinforcement and practical application. A significant feature of this book is its substantial coverage of distinguishing between synonyms and near-synonyms, aimed at helping students who have accumulated a certain vocabulary but struggle with proper usage. Additionally, to emphasize the integration of learning and practice, each lesson includes complementary exercises with three types of questions: vocabulary, cloze, and error correction. These questions are carefully selected from CET-6 exam papers since 1997, making them suitable for self-assessment by students. (For details on the scoring reform and question adjustments of the CET exams, please refer to Appendix 1.) This book is edited by Zhao Yanping, a faculty member of the School of Foreign Languages at Donghua University, with planning by Associate Professor Qin Shifu, who also served as the chief editor and proofreader. The authors extend heartfelt gratitude to colleagues, friends, and publishing house editors for their strong support. Due to the authors' limited expertise, imperfections may exist, and the readers are kindly invited to provide constructive feedback.
