Features: Mom was anxiously stamping her feet, "How am I supposed to get this down?" Without a word, I hugged the swaying tree like a little cat and "scrambled" up. Grandma saw the commotion and ran out of the house. Her silver hair was tousled by the wind as she stood beneath the tree with outstretched arms, exclaiming, "My little ancestor, are you not afraid of dying?" I asked Mom for a long bamboo pole to pick the clothes off the branch. But no matter how I tried, I couldn’t reach them. I wrapped one arm around the tree trunk, swaying like a swing. Grandma watched from below, eyes wide, endlessly chattering, "What’s the harm in losing a piece of clothing? My granddaughter’s safety is what matters!" Another gust of wind came, and I seized the opportunity to climb two more meters higher. This time, I reached the clothes. Using the bamboo pole, I slowly wrapped it around the collar and gently pulled. Finally, I managed to pick them down. At that moment, Grandma’s face broke into a smile, and Mom wiped the sweat from her brow with her sleeve. I jumped down from the tree. Grandma pointed at my forehead, "You’re nothing but a show-off." Sometimes, in my eagerness to prove myself, I’ve endured all kinds of hardships and made a fool of myself.
I love spicy food, so Mom always adds a few chili peppers when cooking. During meals, seeing the few bright red peppers in the center of the plate, my urge to show off resurfaced: "I dare eat all these peppers at once." The family looked at me and shook their heads, "What kind of child you are!" Using chopsticks, I picked up the peppers and said honestly, looking at the red peppers in the plate, I really felt scared. But to prove myself, I clenched my fists and bit down hard, sending the peppers straight into my mouth. I chewed them down big bites. The fiery sensation shot through my nose like an electric current, steam billowing from my nostrils. Tears streamed down my eyes like a spring. Seeing my pathetic state, Mom couldn’t help but laugh and say, "Not showing off now, are you?" But I pretended to be unfazed, kept chewing, and swallowed it all in one gulp. This time, it was even more intense—the esophagus felt like a fireball passing through, and my stomach was like a boiling pot. But I couldn’t act like a coward because I had made that bold promise myself. How could I chicken out now? Mom, full of sympathy, said, "Did you enjoy that little stunt?"
Now I’m in fifth grade, and because of my love for showing off, I’ve experienced all the ups and downs of it. Today, the teacher asked me to be the class learning committee again. It seems I’ll have to keep showing off. So when will I finally be able to break this habit of being a show-off?
