Can you keep soaking in water after a burn?

Patient's question:

At this time this afternoon, my child's foot was scalded by boiling water. At that time, we quickly had the child soak in cold water. Worried and not knowing how long to soak, I'd like to ask: can you keep soaking in water after a burn?

Doctor's answer:

When fresh burns or scalds occur, it can be used to cool the wound. This prevents residual heat from damaging deeper skin tissues and also reduces pain. When the pain subsides, you don't need to soak for a long time. After a scald, remove clothing and socks immediately. Soak undamaged wounds in cold water for half an hour, then apply sesame oil and rapeseed oil to the wound. For large blisters from second-degree burns, you can puncture the edges of the blisters with a sterile needle and rinse them with water. After applying burn ointment, you can wrap and secure the blisters appropriately. For third-degree burns, cover the wound with a clean cloth and seek medical attention promptly. Do not apply purple medicine or ointment to the wound, as this can affect the observation and treatment of the condition.
