Patient's question:
Neonatal jaundice. MRI was performed at one month. The scan results showed: patchy T1 low and T2 low signal shadows near the left lateral ventricle, with surrounding ring-shaped high signals. Is it jaundice affecting the brain?Doctor's answer:
Hello! According to the head MRI results, there is patchy T1 low signal and T2 low signal shadow in the left paraventricular area, with a surrounding ring-like high signal. This may be related to kernicterus. Kernicterus is a group of serious neonatal diseases characterized by jaundice and a large number of nucleated red blood cells in the blood, caused by congenital and/or neonatal constitutional factors. It also produces neurological symptoms due to the harmful effects of bilirubin on central nervous tissue. In the early stages of kernicterus, the main goal is to reduce serum unconjugated bilirubin. Intravenous fluids can be administered to provide energy. Additionally, albumin or plasma, dexamethasone, phenobarbital, nikethamide, and 10% activated charcoal solution, as well as agar, can be administered intravenously. Phototherapy and blood transfusion are also recommended.
