Features: Only with a solid foundation can one build towering structures; acquiring extensive knowledge is always necessary, and elegant manners can add brilliance to your learning. Dear child: The next two years are a very important stage in your life. I cannot help but urge and earnestly plead with you to make good use of this time (this is the advice I currently hope you will accept). To waste a single inch of time now is to tarnish your future reputation; to make full use of every minute is to save a vast amount of resources and bring great benefits to you. You must lay a solid foundation of knowledge in these two years, so that you can build towering structures upon it later, as high as you wish; otherwise, without a solid foundation, the building will only be a castle in the air. Therefore, I beg you not to be stingy with your hard work and effort. You should plant the seeds of knowledge at the right time to reap the harvest. Without knowledge, you cannot become an outstanding person, and you will only be mediocre for your entire life. I often mention learning to you, and I firmly believe you already fully understand its importance. No matter what work you do in the future, it is very necessary to master extensive knowledge. Learning encompasses everything, but a lifetime is extremely limited and cannot be exhausted, nor can the human brain absorb and digest all knowledge. Here, I only point out the knowledge frequently used in life, and I believe you will grasp it better in the process of application. Classical knowledge refers to Greek and Latin, which everyone must master. The term "illiterate" is broadly used to describe those who do not understand Greek and Latin. I hope you can basically master these two languages now, so that you only need to spend a small amount of time consolidating them every day, and more than two years is enough for you to fully master them. Rhetoric, logic, geometry, and astronomy are all subjects you need to spend time learning. I do not expect you to delve deeply into every subject, but you should have some exposure to each discipline. Considering your future career, I believe knowledge of modern languages, history, chronology, geography, and the laws of various countries will be particularly useful to you. You must be proficient in various modern languages, just like the locals. If a person cannot express themselves clearly and fluently in a certain language, they cannot dominate a conversation or communicate normally with others. Your French is already quite good, but you still need to use it frequently in daily life, so that your French level will improve every day. I think your German should be quite good now, and you will definitely master it completely before leaving Leipzig. At least, that is what I believe. In addition, you should also spend some time learning Italian and Spanish. In fact, for those who understand Greek and Latin, these two languages are very easy to learn, will not take up much of your time, and will not be very exhausting. Modern history—I specifically refer to the history of the last three hundred years—should become an important subject for persistent learning, especially the parts closely related to the major powers of Europe. While studying modern history, you should also study chronology and geography. In this way, when you talk about an important historical event, you will clearly know when it happened. You should also find all the places you have learned on the map yourself, which is an effective method for learning geography; if you don’t do this, you will quickly forget what you have learned. Even the foolish can learn some geographical knowledge in a short time, but their memories are not very deep, and they are easily forgotten. In two years, you will enter society and inevitably come into contact with various social circles, and you will inevitably be entangled in tedious matters. By then, you will have no time and energy to learn new knowledge. Although you can reasonably arrange your time and set aside some time to continue accumulating knowledge, there will not be enough time to re-establish a solid foundation. I believe you can deeply understand the meaning of these words and make the right judgment. No matter how arduous the learning process is, do not give up easily. Dear child, for God’s sake, do not waste your time. You must know that every minute and second of yours is very precious, and whether you can win wealth, cultivate good character, and achieve outstanding reputation in the future all depends on whether you cherish the next two years. If you make full use of your time, you can honestly strive for everything you want; if you waste it carelessly, I really don’t know what kind of future you will have. If you hope to become an outstanding person in the future and attract everyone’s attention, then you must study hard now. Without a solid foundation of knowledge, it is like a fantasy to become a talented person; and the knowledge foundation laid in youth will one day repay you for all the effort you have put in. This is my experience, and I hope it is helpful to you. P5-6
