This is a story about a boy who experiences his parents' divorce and changes in his life. Readers can delve into his inner world through his letters. This 1984 award-winning work has not faded with the changing trends; the boy's emotions in the book still resonate deeply with readers. – Children's Literature
There are two major children's literature awards in the world: the International Hans Christian Andersen Award and the Newbery Medal. The International Hans Christian Andersen Award is given to children's literature writers, and sometimes their works are not all outstanding; the Newbery Medal, on the other hand, is awarded to works, and indeed every winning book is of the highest caliber. This book won the Newbery Medal for Excellence, making it a work superior to any writing manual.
Ray read a supplemental book in second grade and really liked the author, Mr. Henshaw. He wrote to him. By sixth grade, for a school assignment, he corresponded with Mr. Henshaw even more closely. In his letters, Ray shared the truth about his parents' divorce, his struggles adjusting to a new school, and his inner loneliness. Through his correspondence with Mr. Henshaw, Ray not only learned how to face life but also understood why his parents couldn’t stay together, felt their love for him, and honed his writing skills. A story he wrote about his trip with his dad in a truck earned him a nomination for the Young Writers’ Contest, further solidifying his determination to become a famous author. This book won the Newbery Medal for Excellence in 1984.
Dear Mr. Henshaw:
I wrote you a letter last year when I was in second grade. You probably didn’t get it. This year, I read the book I told you about——《The Secret Life of Dogs》. It’s my first time reading such a thick book, and it’s divided into chapters. In the book, Joey’s dad says that dogs living in the city are bored, so Joey has to come up with seven ways to make a dog happy to be able to have one. I also have a black dog. His name is “Bandit,” and he’s a good dog. If you write back to me, I can put your letter on the classroom bulletin board. My teacher taught me a trick to remember how to write the word “friend”: two good friends won’t argue for two months in a row.
Sincerely,
Your friend, Ray

Dear Mr. Henshaw:
I’m in fourth grade now. I’ve done a lot of research on 《The Secret Life of Dogs》, which I mentioned in my first two letters to you. My teacher asked us to write to authors during “Reading Week.” I received your reply last year, but it was typed. Could you please write me a letter by hand? I really, really love your book. My favorite character in the book is Joey’s dad because Joey put on recordings of female singers to make his dog happy, and the dog barked nonstop like it was singing, but Joey’s dad didn’t get angry. “Bandit” barks too when he hears people singing.
The best reader,
Ray
