Zivabov was an American farmer who had not received a formal education. At the age of 15, he came to work as a laborer in a subsidiary of Andrew Carnegie, a steel magnate. Upon entering the factory, Zivabov was determined to become an excellent worker and began self-studying technical knowledge. Soon, he was promoted to a technician, and some workers mocked and teased him, saying that he was working so hard for the company was abnormal. But Zivabov replied, “I’m not just working for the company, nor am I just working for money. I’m working for my dreams and for my future. I can only improve myself through performance. I want the value of my work to far exceed my salary. Only then can I be recognized and given opportunities.”
With this confidence, Zivabov steadily rose to become the chief engineer. By the age of 25, he became the general manager of the construction company. Later, Carnegie discovered his management skills and appointed Zivabov as the chairman of the steel company after a few years. Eventually, Zivabov founded his own steel company, the famous U.S. Bethlehem Steel Company. Zivabov achieved his dreams, while the workers who mocked him back then were still working on construction sites.
If we can all recognize that work is for ourselves, we will discover that through work, we learn more knowledge, accumulate more experience, and fully tap our potential. The value of these intangible assets is immeasurable and is the foundation for promotion. In fact, every promotion is a self-transcendence and a complete transformation. Don’t treat these efforts as burdens or losses, because every action of yours will be rewarded.
Gaining Respect from Bosses and Colleagues
Whatever profession you are in or whether your company values you, it doesn’t matter. As long as you fulfill your duties diligently and wholeheartedly, dedicating your energy and passion to your work without hesitation, you will enjoy the joy that work brings you. At the same time, you will earn the respect of others through your work, and this will give you a sense of pride.
Realizing Professional and Self-Value
In Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the highest need of humans is the need for self-actualization. The realization of self-value depends on the realization of professional value, which is what your work contributes to society. For example, doctors bring health to people; construction workers build countless homes for us; lawyers defend justice. From the perspective of professional spirit, no matter how small a job may seem, it can create value for humanity. The value of a cleaner is “making our living environment more beautiful,” while a seamstress’s work makes our clothing more fashionable. In a certain sense, realizing professional value is equivalent to realizing self-value. The people working in these positions not only fulfill their professional value but also realize the meaning of their existence in society and contribute to it. The value we create is closely related to our level of dedication. The more dedicated we are, the greater the professional value we create, and the more we can realize our self-value.
In fact, the benefits of dedication go far beyond what has been mentioned above. Dedication can also enrich our souls, give us spiritual wealth, and make us industry benchmarks, among other things. However, reaching a high level of dedication requires many conditions. Nevertheless, possessing and cultivating an outstanding spirit of dedication will be a lifelong asset.
The Belief in Dedication
On the journey of life, we cannot always be smooth-sailing or have everything go our way. Some people become strong in life and create miracles that ordinary people find hard to achieve—thanks to their belief. The greatness of belief lies in its ability to help you set sail forward even in adversity and to summon the courage to face life’s challenges even when encountering misfortune. Belief is a flame that never goes out in the heart. Belief is the inner driving force that guarantees success in pursuing goals throughout life. P4-5
