How to judge newborn jaundice?

Patient's question:

The baby is too young, and I don't want to go through the trouble of a nearby hospital. I don't know how to correctly judge at home. When I got up early this morning, I noticed the baby's face was a bit yellow, and today's bowel movement is also a little yellow. So, how can I determine if the baby has jaundice?

Doctor's answer:

First, visually observe; second, measure bilirubin through the skin. The gold standard is to check the serum bilirubin level through blood draw. "Return" does not mean complete disappearance, but rather reducing to a safe range is sufficient. Treatment is only required when exceeding the standard, mainly divided into phototherapy, exchange transfusion, and drug treatment for control. Exchange transfusion is used for severe jaundice cases where phototherapy fails. Drug treatment has a slow onset of action and is commonly used for babies over two weeks old in clinical practice.
