What causes a baby's stool to be grayish-green?

Patient's question:

The baby is seven months old. A few days ago, we started feeding them formula milk, which is from the Yasieli brand. After eating it, their stool turned grayish-green. When we consulted other mothers of babies, they said, "It's caused by the incomplete absorption of iron in the formula milk." Is this correct? Should we switch to a different formula?

Doctor's answer:

I don't know if the green stool you're referring to is blue-green or gray-green. How is the stool's consistency? Is it dry or loose? How many times has it occurred? If the blue-green, loose stool increases in frequency, the baby may be experiencing hunger-induced diarrhea due to not being well-fed. Simply increasing the baby's milk intake should resolve this. A cold abdomen can also cause changes in stool consistency. Pay attention to keeping the baby's abdomen warm. Gray-green stool is due to food residue being digested by bile. Bile is yellow and makes the stool acidic. After being excreted, it occasionally turns green when exposed to air.
