Can placental insufficiency undergo amniocentesis?

Patient's question:

My wife previously experienced spotting, so she was hospitalized. An ultrasound revealed low-lying placenta. Later, she underwent a Down syndrome screening, and the test results showed high HCG levels, 1/136. She has consulted doctors about whether an amniocentesis can be performed, and the doctors said there are risks, advising her to discuss it with her husband at home. She is now 20 weeks pregnant, which is the optimal time for an amniocentesis. Therefore, we would like to ask if it is possible for a woman in her situation to undergo an amniocentesis? We are both very anxious and frustrated.

Doctor's answer:

Analysis of the condition: Based on your medical history, your wife visited the hospital due to spotting. The ultrasound examination revealed low-lying placenta (also known as placenta previa). This condition is prone to bleeding from placental abruption.
Advice: Previous tests showed a high risk in the Down syndrome screening, and amniocentesis was considered. For your wife's low-lying placenta, the procedure carries a higher risk of injuring the fetus or placenta, which could affect the child. The risk is higher compared to other pregnant women. Although it is not a contraindication, the risk is high, and it will be up to you as parents to make the decision.
