Wenzhou Historical Inscriptions Volume II - (Full 2 Volumes)

Author: Wu Mingzhe

Publish Date: 2006-04-01
Features: The history of Wenzhou has witnessed several compilations of selected inscriptions on stone tablets. Briefly, the Ming Hongzhi Annals of Wenzhou Prefecture included 93 inscriptions; the Wanli Annals of Wenzhou Prefecture, 47; the Qing Qianlong Annals of Wenzhou Prefecture, 133; the Records of Stone and Gold of Dongyou, 28; and the Guangxu Annals of Yongjia County, 129. Except for the Records of Stone and Gold, the inscriptions recorded in other works are usually categorized under specific headings, with incomplete titles at the beginning and end and often summarized in the main text, exhibiting varying degrees of flaws. Over time, stone tablets have suffered from wind and rain damage. Whether in locating, tracing, photographing, or deciphering the text, the challenges are immense. Taking the Brief Introduction to the Righteous Fields tablet in Ligang Village, Ligang Township, Taishun County as an example, the preliminary investigation was extremely arduous. The mountain path was steep and terrifying, the tablet stood in a dilapidated field and was immovable, photography failed, and even though it was traced, deciphering the text was difficult. The short 500-plus characters took more than half a month of consultation with numerous experts. Wenzhou boasts a rich cultural heritage and profound historical, with abundant surviving stone tablets. Despite years of research, many treasures remain undiscovered. Therefore, as this book is published, we still hope that colleagues will share information to further the search.
